Dr. Stewart Shofner

is a corneal fellowship trained ophthalmologist in private practice in Nashville. He was a corneal fellow at the L.S. U. Eye Center in New Orleans, Louisiana. The L.S.U. Corneal Fellowship is one of the top training programs in the world. As an example of the excellence of this program, L.S.U.'s Chairman, Dr. Herbert Kaufman introduced to the world the first ocular drug to treat Herpes Simplex. In addition, the Corneal Department of L.S.U. has been successful in developing and then teaching surgeons new refractive surgical techniques.

While at L.S.U., Dr. Shofner received comprehensive subspecialty training in corneal transplant surgery, corneal and external diseases, anterior segment reconstructive surgery and refractive surgery. As a Corneal Fellow, Dr. Shofner surgically assisted in the treatment of the first normally sighted myopic patients to receive Excimer laser Photorefractive Keratectomy (PRK) in the United States.

The Excimer laser breaks molecular bonds in the cornea and allows the surgeon to reshape the curvature of the cornea to correct vision. Today, Dr. Shofner has completed over 20,000 of these refractive vision correction surgeries.

Dr. Shofner has introduced the Topographical Modeling System, an advanced computer that analyzes the surface and the curvature of the cornea in over 7,000 spots. This device allows (a) the earliest detection of keratoconus, (b) the exact fitting of contact lenses in difficult corneal problems, and (c) the most accurate measurements to follow corneal astigmatism postoperatively.

Dr. Shofner is Board Certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology, a Fellow of the American Academy of Ophthalmology. He is a member of the Nashville Academy of Ophthalmology, the Tennessee Academy of Ophthalmology, the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery, the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology, the Castroviejo Society, the Nashville Academy of Medicine, the Tennessee Medical Association, and the American Medical Association.

Dr. Shofner has published 10 separate articles in Ophthalmology journals and has presented original papers at international ophthalmology meetings.

Dr. Stewart Shofner is from Shelbyville, Tennessee, where his ancestral family has lived since the early 1800's. His educational background includes a Bachelor of Arts in Biology, cum laude, from Harvard University; a Medical Degree from the University of Virginia and an Ophthalmology Residency at Yale University.
